. controversial right-to-work measures will soon be the law of the land in michigan. republican governor rick snider signed the law despite wide protests at the capitol. the law will make it illegal for a union employee to pay union dues as a condition of their employment. >> let's explain that. just for half a second. then we'll go on. right to work, what does it mean? people ask me, what does it mean? it means unions can force somebody to pay them if they want to get a job in the state of michigan. >> well, what it means is, if you get a job, the union extracts money from your paycheck for the dues for union dues. >> well, yeah. >> automatically. >> automatically. >> you've got no choice. oh, you want to work here? well, you've got to pay us. >> right. >> what if i don't want to pay you? what if i don't want to support the candidates you support? what if they're the antithesis of my values? too bad. and so i've never understood this. >> governor snider says it was the unions who started the fight in the first place. by trying to add collective bargaining rights in the state's constitution.

states. host: let's get a republican voice. our next caller is calling from west bloomfield, michigan, on the republican line. good morning. caller: i would like to get your thoughts on a balanced approach and have unbiased taxation by using a flat tax. that way you can calculate the amount of taxes we need for the deficit over 10 years. another point is to control the spending on entitlements by not giving millionaires social security benefits, thereby satisfying president obama's approach. instead of doing it through taxation, he can do it through the entitlements. guest: those are both ideas that have been raised, especially the social security and medicare benefits for the wealthy and potentially might not need them to live off of. one tricky part of that is wealthier americans have been paying these taxes for decades into social security and medicare if and a lot of folks have a problem with the idea of taking away their benefits they have paid for if just because they happen to be more well off. and issued the first caller raised and something to watch is this could really sort

my colleague from the great state of michigan to join us, mr. curson is a new member, came in during a special election. welcome. delighted to have you join us. mr. curson: thank you. i agree wholeheartedly with what's been said so far and the testimony, what i really want to say -- into the mic. what i really want to say is medicare is run more efficiently than nearly any insurance company in the world. they devote less than 2% of its funding to administrative expenses, and you compare that to a private insurance company that costs up to 40% of premiums for individuals and small group plans for administration and to pay their executives six and seven-figure salaries to do the same thing that'sed a minute straighted by -- that's administered by medicare officials. and the attempts to move medicare eligibility from 65 to 67 sounds like an easy fix. well, not only, as was spoken earlier, the recipients, those people that are 64, 65, 66 going into that category are people that possibly are already struggling, lost their jobs. they need that health care. they have a pre-existing conditio

michigan, ohio going towards tomorrow. we will be watching this storm to trek eastward. two to four inches on top of what's on the ground in pennsylvania. this storm is also going to bring substantial snowfall across new england once again. you can see the legend showing us we're anticipating six inches of snow through the mountains into virginia, but then by the time we get to sunday, look at this, another pocket of heavy snow in central connecticut according to computer models as well as rhode island and the northfork of long island. that's what is interesting about long island, you will get snow in one part, 11 miles to the south it will be rain. many people are traveling this weekend that took the entire week off, they were on vacation. anticipating more snowfall for parts of new england. the storm setup for today, heavy rain through the mid south. snow popping up in the heartland again. again, this is an area that already saw plenty of snow this week. the colder air is plummeting down with temperatures for highs only in the 20s in kansas city and minneapolis, warming back up along the

for tin sent lives lost in newtown. each with a name and age. from kalamazoo, michigan, 700 bracelets from a business and students headed to newtown. flower seeds inside each of those smiling faces for the community to wear and plant. and for the newtown police department, officers around connecticut banning together, volunteering to work on christmas day so every newtown officer can have the day off with their family. and at their town hall, mountains of donated toys from all over the country. even hurricane sandy victims sending comfort and kindness from what little they have left. nearly two months since sandy and many still live without power. volunteers going door to door. one family said they just wanted a christmas tree for their children. so volunteers from maryland got to work. in one of the most devastated neighborhoods, we spotted a secret santa known as sandy claus making special deliveries. >> i couldn't stop smiling. i just love to see the look on the kids' faces and finally be happy after all the devastation they wept through. >> reporter: 8-year-old patricia, whose family i

him to in michigan, senator inouye made his two lifelong friends, one senator bob dole, who as we know, became majority leader here in the senate and the republican nominee for president of the united states. and his other lifetime friend is the late senator phil hart, who was known as the conscience of the senate and the hart building, the massive senate office building, is named after him. asked by his son why after being classified as an enemy alien he and the members of the 442nd fought so heroically, senator inouye said in his usual, calm man, for the children. and for the children there could be no finer role model than senator dan inouye. he was a recipient of the medal of honor, a congressional gold medal, the highest honor can bestow. he served the distinguished service cross, a bronze star for valor and, of course, a purple heart. dan inouye showed the same dedication in congress he displayed on if battlefield. i want to take just a little bit here, mr. president, and talk about a meeting that i had, i mentioned it very previously last night but it was ten days ago. i knew se
